Air conditioning systems are typically specified to work with your office full of people on the hottest day of the year. Of course, during most of the year, your office is neither as full of staff as it might be nor is it the hottest day of the year. Therefore, for much of the time, your air conditioning system is running with a partial load. The motor systems used in air conditioning systems waste a great deal of energy when they run like this, largely due to the size and internal design of the motor.

The Energy Guardian Motor Energy Saving Solution (MOESS) works by putting some simple, well understood technology onto the mains supply of the motor to optimise the workings of that motor when operating in these partial-loading conditions.

The system has been used on many installations. Although savings will vary from installation to installation, they are typically in the region of 10% for smaller air conditioning systems or a little less for larger installations that are made up of multiple smaller air conditioning units.

The system is simple to install and will typically pay for itself in just one to two years.

If you would like to start saving energy on your air conditioning system, the first thing to do is to understand what energy your current system is using and measure the potential savings you could achieve. We do this by putting an Advanced Smart Meter system onto your AC unit for a month and then analysing the data it produces.

If you already have the Energy Guardian Smart Metering system installed, this meter is a seamless extension to your existing system and we can install it for you in a couple of hours. If you do not have the system, we would of course encourage you to consider installing one, but we can also fit a stand-alone metering system for you just to look at this particular aspect. Costs

For existing Energy Guardian customers, the budgetary guideline costs of the system is as follows:

• To fit the Smart Metering A/C Monitoring System: £399
• Then, if you want to go ahead and install the MOESS system: £479 per unit (single phase systems) or £749 per unit (three phase systems)

The system requires minimal maintenance but we do recommend an annual check, which normally would be included as part of your Energy Guardian maintenance schedule and so only has a marginal additional cost.
